Context of the assignment
Chicory is a cool-season plant and it requires careful handling and processing to maintain its quality and freshness. One of the challenges of chicory farming is the shift form efficiently and accurately without damaging them. This is where automation can play a key role in improving productivity, reducing waste, and saving labor costs. Chicory is often described as an two-stage rocket: first, the root is grown in the field and harvested. Then it’s frozen untill the growing season. The growing season happens in the dark. For that, the root is unfrozen and planted in a growing box. This part is what the customer wants automated. The growing box is a grid and a robot will pick the roots from a conveyor to an empty spot in the grid for growing.
The assignment
You will research the possibilities of automating the placement of chicory roots using a delta robot. You will work with a team of specialists from both the customer and Batenburg Beenen. This system uses a robotized gripping mechanism to move the chicory roots from the infeed belt to the growing box. Speed, accuracy and robustness is of utmost importance here. The farming industry is pretty tight and the success of a project is often based on actual savings.
Research questions that come to mind are:
· Which robotic motors can achieve the speed and accuracy required.
· Is there a business case? Does automation actually save costs in the long run?

What are you going to do?
You will go through the usual steps of a research or design project. To answer all the research questions that come to mind there is too little time. That is why it is important to define a clear scope at the start of the project. We have all the test facilities in-house to conduct extensive experiments, digital twin software, hardware if needed. At the end of the project, a description of the developed solution and must be described in a transfer document.
You will need to communicate a lot with the project team, clients and communicate with the growers.
